
Derek Helms, Director of Safety for Tray Pack Operations for Perdue Foods, has been awarded the Safety Professional of the Year Award by the Delmarva Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).
The award is presented annually by the Delmarva Chapter to an ASSP member who demonstrates outstanding achievements in the occupational safety and health field while also advancing the profession overall. The Delmarva Chapter provides professional development and leadership opportunities to safety and health professionals on the Delmarva Peninsula.
“Derek has earned this recognition with his passion and daily commitment to safety and the well-being of our associates,” Frank Cruice, Senior Director of Corporate Safety and Security for Perdue Farms, who endorsed Derek’s nomination. “Derek has more than 13 years of experience as a practicing safety professional. He has driven safety improvements both within Perdue and with Delmarva chapter member companies by helping foster professional development and instructing at educational opportunities that enrich participants experience and knowledge.”
Derek, based in Salisbury, Md., joined Perdue in 2008 as Safety and Security Manager in Perry, Ga. He currently serves as the Delmarva Chapter President and was previously its Vice President.
Derek will now compete with other local chapter safety professionals for the ASSP’s Region VI Safety Professional of the Year Award.
